If you want to buy a new phone from T-mobile do you have to sign a new 2 year contract?

I have the sidekick slide and have had it for over a year now and would like to change it and by the my touch. But if I buy a new phone from T-mobile does that mean I have to sign another 2 year contract even though I still have a year left on the original? I don’t want to change my plan just my phone, can I do it without signing another contract?

    Since you’re not eligible for an upgrade (which would require you to sign a new contract) a new phone would be full price.
